Pittsburgh job fairs: why businesses attend and you should too.

Many Pittsburgh companies will advertise the positions they are seeking to fill prior to the job fair they will be attending. However, even if you don’t see a job you are interested in, or qualified for, you should use this opportunity to meet the hiring managers for the companies in attendance. There are several reasons why.

First, meeting an insider at that company will give you an opportunity to pitch your resume and perhaps see where else you might fit into their organization. This is especially helpful if that particular company is on your list of targeted businesses for who you would like to work.

A Pittsburgh job seeker’s version of speed dating.
A second reason to attend is to get a lot of practice interviewing. Ever hear of “speed dating”? This is an event where a large group of single people meet each other one and one for only a few minutes. In that few minutes they have an opportunity to learn about each other and pitch the reasons why they would make a good date.

Much like speed dating, job fair interviews are short and specific. That means you have to be comfortable giving your own interview version of an elevator speech. Doing this with 10-15 interviewers in one day versus 30 days will quickly allow you to polish your presentation.

Human resource professionals and their staff of interviewers are some of the best connected people in business.
Just like a salesman, who didn’t make a sale, knows to ask for references of people who would be interested in what she is selling, you should ask the interviewer if she knows another employer who would be interested in your experience. If you are referred to someone else be sure to mention the name of the person who referred you when you meet the other employer!

Once you’ve met these company representatives be sure to get their business cards. That will give you key contact information should you need it now to follow up on a conversation you had or in the future when you find other job openings at that company. On the back of the card write down something about that person that will help you remember them in more detail.

Are you underemployed, unemployed, or looking for new work? Learn more about ways of managing your budget, making yourself more marketable in the workplace, and negotiating your expenses down at HowToScareTheHellOutOfUnemployment.com.

5 Tips That Will Make Interviewers Hire You

What makes you marketable when looking for a new job? Do you have a special work skill that is in demand? What is it that you excel in and your potential employers’ value? Employers want to hire people that add value to their organization. That means they will pay for people that generate profit for the company. Having the skill that a particular employer is looking for is what makes you marketable. So how do you get that message across to employers? It is one thing to tell someone you can do the job, but having the opportunity to demonstrate your ability is what can move you from applicant to employee.

With 4+ job seekers for every 1 job opening there is currently a lot of competition for jobs. Some may find it tempting to pad their resumes or exaggerate their experiences in order to make themselves stand out. Hiring managers aren’t unaware of this fact though. They want to see proof that backs up what you are telling them on your resume. Ever hear that seeing is believing? One way to prove you have the skills is to “talk the talk and walk the walk”. Do you behave and talk in a manner that an employer would expect from a professional in your line of work?

You may have all the right experience and skills but if you can’t communicate those facts properly you won’t get a chance to demonstrate your ability. Many people talk about the importance of communication during the application process but how do you know if you are communicating your skills properly?

Communication takes various forms. For example, you communicate through actions and behaviors, writing, talking over the phone or in person to an interviewer, or through your body language. Make sure that all your forms of communication are congruent with the skills required for the job. Comportment is important! If you are interviewing for a position that requires relaying accurate and concise information you won’t get far with long winded explanations and endless stories.

These 5 communication hints will help you stand out at your job interview:

-Get to the point. Using flowery words and speech to impress an interviewer will show a lack of focus. State facts and cite examples in a succinct manner.

-Be confident. Now is not the time for modesty. Be ready to answer these questions with confidence: “What value do you bring to the company?” “Why do you want this much salary?” “Why are you the best candidate?”

-Be professionally assertive. Ask for an interview. Ask for a tour. Ask for the opportunity to demonstrate your skills. Ask for the job. This shows you are serious about working here.

-Answer the question. Answer the question with enough information to demonstrate your experience and value, but remember interviewers are not looking for a college dissertation. Don’t tip toe around a question. If you don’t understand, ask for clarification.

-Give solutions. “Here is how I would solve that.” “Have you considered trying my XYZ solution?” “Our industry is currently experimenting with ABC.”

6 things you should do immediately if you lose your job.

Sign up for unemployment the very day you lose your job.
There is a waiting period of one week from the day you lose your job until you qualify to collect unemployment benefits. Then after you complete the unemployment application process and you qualify for unemployment there will still be another period of time before you start receiving benefit checks. From the day you apply for benefits it could take up to 3 weeks before you receive your first check. Signing up immediately via the Internet or over the phone allows you to minimize the length of time you will go without any income at all.

Protect your credit rating.
Having access to inexpensive short term credit could be the safety net you need during this hard time. If you need to move into less expensive housing your credit rating will most likely play a factor in the process. Some employers use credit reports as one factor in their hiring decisions. Your credit rating also determines the amount you pay for insurance on your home and car, the interest rates you get, and if you qualify for new credit and how much.

Be careful not to start subsidizing your lifestyle with credit. Opening new accounts, closing accounts, exceeding 50% of your credit limit, or paying late all have varying degrees of negative affects on your credit score which could mean higher costs in other areas.

Get a gym membership.
A gym membership will give you many advantages if used properly while unemployed. It will get you out of the house everyday. You will meet new people with whom to socialize and network. Exercise is proven to elevate your mood and keep you healthier. Many gyms will have daycare for children, provide locker room and shower facilities, provide wi-fi access, and offer affiliate discounts to other retailers associated with the gym or neighborhood.

Protect your health.
Those who lose their job often report feelings of depression, which is just one trigger that can lead to sickness. Becoming sick while unemployed could lead to even harder financial challenges. Think about your ability to pay for unexpected health care. Make even more effort now to eat nutritious food, exercise, and practice preventative medicine.

Stay mobile.
Who will hire you in your living room? You need to get out of your house and comfort zone and start knocking on doors and shaking hands. Not only will you prove you are ambitious and will work harder than other applicants by showing up at employers' front doors, but you will be in a better mood by being outside and moving around.

Thought staying at home and using the web was a more efficient way of finding a job? This story on CNNMoney.com makes the point that a pathetic 4% of open positions were filled by referrals from CareerBuilder.com, a major player in the job website business.

Maximize your new greatest asset.
You may not have a steady paycheck right now, but you do have a lot more of another asset: your time. Before, you are trading your time for a paycheck. Now you have much more time with which you can invest in yourself. Of course you're going to be looking for a new source of income, but now you should learn new work skills with a
part-time temporary job, increase the value of your home by touching up its’ curb appeal, or take classes to enhance your education, for example.

3 more things you should consider doing.
Get a AAA card.

There are many discount and membership cards that you can buy for yourself, but the AAA card stands out. In a sense it's a discount card and an insurance card for one price. Now that you're watching your budget even closer you want to protect yourself from financial loss because of breakdowns or accidents. Your AAA membership will provide you security against many automobile problems.

Additionally, there are also hundreds of retailers that give a discount to AAA members on top of their best offers. Also, many pharmacies will discount your prescription costs when you present your AAA card. They will even do it for pet medicine. Overall, keeping the AAA card handy will help lower expenses.

Get internet access.
Web access will allow you to find cheaper prices, better values, and more options.

Use the internet access at the unemployment office, library, or wi-fi hotspot if you need to, but be sure you get online. Use the internet not just to find employers, but to let them find you. Don’t rely on a Monster, LinkedIn or Facebook profile to pitch your resume, rather stand out by creating your own free website through Blogger that showcases your resume and talent. Look at this example: http://www.hirejosh.com/

Get a library card.
You will quickly find that the library is a tremendous resource while unemployed. A well equipped library can serve as your office which offers meeting rooms, copying and printing services, wireless internet, computer equipment, and various other office equipment.

Many libraries will also provide hundreds of resources to help you find a job, in addition to providing nearly any book, magazine, or newspaper you want whether it be in print or digital format. The Allegheny County library system, for example, is comprised of 80+ libraries and allows you access to thousands of movies, audiobooks, and CDs. The state of Pennsylvania also provides library patrons with access to job hunting help via their computer network.
