Job Fair And Career Tips

1) Get to the point immediately with a well-prepared elevator speech. There can be hundreds of people competing for employers' attention at a job fair so when you get your opportunity to talk to a hiring manager be sure you have rehearsed what you are going to say. Bonus tip: make sure you are not only telling the company representative what you bring to the table, but be prepared to demonstrate you did some homework and know what their hot issues are. Knowing how you can solve their current problems is one of the very best ways to stand out from the competition.

2) Job fairs are an excellent way to get your resume directly into the hands of hiring managers.

3) Can't get a raise? Negotiate for a better title. That can be leveraged into more money elsewhere.

4) Attend the job fair a little later in the day. The early bird gets the worm, right? Not in the case of job fairs. Show up early and there is a good chance you won't get noticed at all. Job seekers believe that showing up early is a good reflection on them. Generally, this is true. If you are scheduled for an interview at 11am you want to show up at 1045am. However, job fairs are different.

5) Step 1: Get name of person interviewing you for job. Step 2: Google that person / search them on LinkedIn. Know they did the same to you minutes ago.

Build Your Resume With Volunteerism
It’s rare that an employer gives you an advance notice that you are losing your job. Typically what happens is you go to work as if it’s a normal day and are later approached by your supervisor or Human Resources representative and told you are being let go. Of course when this happens the vast majority of people don't have another job immediately lined up and are now facing all the challenges that come with unemployment and starting over. One of those challenges will be an employment gap on their resume. While there are several ways to avoid an employment gap on your resume, volunteering is an excellent option for several reasons.

Job fairs: why businesses attend and you should too.
Many Pittsburgh companies will advertise the positions they are seeking to fill prior to the job fair they will be attending. However, even if you don’t see a job you are interested in, or qualified for, you should use job fair to meet the hiring managers for the Pittsburgh companies in attendance. There are several reasons why.

First, meeting an insider at that company will give you an opportunity to pitch your resume and perhaps see where else you might fit into their organization. This is especially helpful if that particular company is on your list of targeted businesses in Pittsburgh for who you would like to work.

How a Pittsburgh job fair is like speed dating.
A second reason to attend a job fair in Pittsburgh is to get a lot of practice interviewing. Ever hear of “speed dating”? This is an event where a large group of single people meet each other one on one for only a few minutes. In that few minutes they have an opportunity to learn about each other and pitch the reasons why they would make a good date.

Much like speed dating, job fair interviews in Pittsburgh are short and specific. That means you have to be comfortable giving your own interview version of an elevator speech. Doing this with 10-15 interviewers in one day versus 30 days will quickly allow you to polish your presentation.

Human resource professionals and their staff of interviewers are some of the best connected people in business.
Just like a salesperson, who didn’t make a sale, knows to ask for references of people who would be interested in what she is selling, you should ask the interviewer if she knows another Pittsburgh employer who would be interested in your work experience. If you are referred to someone else be sure to mention the name of the person who referred you when you meet the other employer!

Any time you meet a recruiter or employer at a Pittsburgh job fair be sure to get their business card. That will give you key contact information should you need it now to follow up on a conversation you had or in the future when you find other job openings at that company. On the back of the card write down something about that person that will help you remember them in more detail. Find a Pittsburgh job fair now!

Play Like Troy Polamalu When Searching For Work
By Mike Bowman

On December 12, 2010, there was a vivid picture of intensity on the football field in Heinz Stadium in Pittsburgh. In the game’s second quarter Steelers’ strong safety Troy Polamalu intercepted a pass thrown by Carson Palmer. 45 yards away from the end zone Polamalu was determined to turn this opportunity into 6 points.

He fought for every one of those 45 yards, running like a hungry bear was chasing him. In those last 5 yards he brought together all of his intensity, experience, and training into superhuman like athleticism as he practically flew parallel to the ground into the very tip of the end zone to collect his 6 points.

There was still half a game to play. It wasn’t like the Steelers desperately need the 6 points at that moment in the game, but that is how Polamalu plays. He plays like the team does desperately need those points, and more often than naught the team has been grateful to have those points in its’ pocket when unexpected complications happen later in the game. That is why he is one of the league’s most valuable players.

Key Takeaway For Job Seekers: That is the same kind of intensity you must apply to earning more income and protecting your standard of living. The day your income is reduced or eliminated is the day your savings and unemployment benefits start to erode. Don’t believe you are ok because you have 26+ weeks of unemployment insurance. Play to win right now; don’t wait 26 weeks to attempt scoring a new job.

How? Start by learning how to be successful at job fairs. Job fairs give you an opportunity to meet recruiters and hiring managers face to face. Job fairs also allow you to make your pitch to a human being rather than a company’s screening software, thus giving you a much better chance of getting the job you really want.

Volunteering: A Job Search Strategy
Volunteering your time as a job search strategy makes sense. Not only are you helping out the community at large, but you could be learning new, marketable skills, adding relevant experience to your resume, and meeting new people to add to your professional network; people who can help you find a new job. Carefully select where you volunteer your time. Yes, volunteer at an organization you are passionate about, but find opportunities that let you meet new people and enhance / learn new job skills.
