5 Reasons You Should Attend A Job Fair
Let's face it. One of the biggest obstacles job seekers have is actually getting a hold of the person who is the final decision maker in the hiring process. They are surrounded by a thick wall of receptionists, unlisted numbers, and screening software, all put in place to keep you from getting to the boss. Job fairs change all that though. One reason you want to attend job fairs is that company representatives leave their access controlled offices and go to these events to meet job seekers face to face. This gives you a much better chance of connecting with the hiring manager and getting the job you really want. Here are even more reasons to attend your local job fairs.

5 ways you can be successful at the job fairs listed here.
1. The very best thing you can do to be successful at a Philadelphia job fair is find out who will be there and do your homework. The number one complaint Philadelphia employers have about job fair attendees is that they don't know anything about the employer they are approaching. Make yourself stand out by doing your homework ahead of time and have something to talk to each employer about.

2. At any job fair in Philadelphia that you attend, be sure to dress professionally. Even though this advice has been written over and over again there continues to be job seekers who show up at job fairs wearing jeans, ball caps, T-shirts, etc. There is no better way to say "I really don't care about this job" to an employer at a job fair then by dressing like you are heading to a family picnic.

3. Really want to get a job offer at the next Philadelphia job fair you attend? Then don't be bashful. You are here to get a job. Employers are attending the job fair to offer jobs. So don't hesitate to ask for either another interview or job offer! Remember, it never hurts to ask!

4. Some of the job fairs in Philadelphia are very large with up to 100 employers. You could be there for many hours. Considering that fact be sure to bring light snacks and water. You can keep them in your car, rather than carrying them with you, but at least they are handy. Take several breaks, stay hydrated, wash your hands, and reorganize any brochures / paperwork you pick up before you go back into the job fair and start interviewing again.

5. When you arrive at any of the Philadelphia job fairs listed on this page be sure to take note of all the employers participating that day. Often there is a program given to each job fair attendee that lists the names of each employer. Using this list as a reference be sure to visit every employer's booth. Even if they don't immediately appear to have a job you are qualified for or interested in, use the opportunity to ask about other jobs they may have opening in the near future or ask for a reference or lead that may help you meet an employer who is a better match for you. Here are tips for standing out like a sore thumb at a job fair.

1. Attend the job fair later in the day.
The early bird gets the worm. Right? Not in the case of job fairs. Show up early and there is a good chance you wont get noticed at all. This may sound counter-intuitive as we have always been told to show up early so we can demonstrate our punctuality and work ethic. However, in the case of job fairs showing up early often backfires because everyone has shown up early. In fact it is not uncommon to see a long line of applicants forming at the front door before the job fair begins.

The hiring managers can easily be overwhelmed trying to manage a large number of applicants vying for their attention all at once. When that happens they focus more on simply collecting your resume, handing you some marketing materials, and quickly moving on to the next applicant.

Things will settle down later in the day, allowing you to have more time with the company representatives. Additionally, you may see they've accumulated a large pile of resumes. Guess where your resume will go? Right on top.

Still concerned that showing up later in the day will reflect badly on you? Thank the hiring manager for taking time to talk to you and that you were at work or with a client earlier in the morning. That lets the hiring manager know you value customers before yourself. A highly prized trait.

2. Dress appropriately at the job fair.
Whether judging someone by their haircut, physical features, or clothing is right or wrong, it happens. Use it to your advantage.

3. Visit every job fair booth and employer.
Use this strategy if you want the best employers to look at you as the best candidate at the job fair.

4. Exude enthusiasm.
Your level of enthusiasm in front of an employer says a lot about you. It shows how much you are interested in working for the company. "Enthusiasm glows, radiates, permeates and immediately captures everyone's interest."

5. Get to the point immediately with a well-prepared elevator speech.
Using flowery words and speech to impress an interviewer at the job fair will show a lack of focus. State facts and cite examples in a succinct manner.

How Volunteerism Eliminates Dreaded Employment Gaps
Having an employment gap on your resume today is about the same as putting a giant flashing sign on your resume that says "Please do not even think about offering me a new job!". Many career coaches will tell you that putting just about anything on your resume is better than putting nothing. Whether it is right or wrong, many employers look at an employment gap as nothing more than a period of time you were simply relaxing in a recliner in front of the television with a cold drink in your hand. It is imperative that you have some positive activity listed on your resume in place of a full-time job when you are out looking for work. There are several ways to do that.

One idea is to perform temporary work or serve as a consultant to a company in the same industry you looking to enter / re-enter. Another idea is to simply take any job, even a part-time or seasonal job, and then list that on your resume, rather than leaving any periods of time unexplained. One option many job seekers find appealing is volunteering their time.

Volunteering in your community has many advantages. Obviously, you are contributing to your community and making it a better place for everyone who lives there. That fact alone will give you a sense of pride and accomplishment, which can be a much needed emotional boost during a tough time. However, don't forget that volunteerism is also a good way to meet people who may be able to help you with your job search, enhance your job skills or learn new ones, and demonstrate that you are an active, hard-working contributor.

Here is a list of places you can volunteer in Philadelphia.

1. Children's Hospital of Philadelphia
34th Street and Civic Center Boulevard Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
They work alongside healthcare professionals, help in clinical and non-clinical areas, and support the Hospital's mission to care for not just the patient, but the entire family.

2. Philadelphia Red Cross
2221 Chestnut Street Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
The Philadelphia Red Cross provides food and shelter in emergencies, assist members of our armed forces and their families, teach lifesaving skills, and more, and there's a volunteer opportunity for everyone.

3. United Way of Philadelphia
1709 Benjamin Franklin Parkway Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Whether you’re interested in mentoring a young person, offering your skills as a financial advisor or spending an afternoon with a senior, the United Way has excellent volunteer opportunities.

4. Free Library Of Philadelphia
1905 Locust St, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 215-685-6621
There are many opportunities at Parkway Central Library and our 53 neighborhood branches throughout the city, including the Library for the Blind and the Physically Handicapped.

5. St. Christopher's Hospital for Children
Volunteer Department 3601 A Street Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 215-427-5398
Volunteers may select the work setting they desire: some may work directly with patients, while others may volunteer in a service department that supports patient care.
