5 Business Lessons I Learned While Delivering Pizzas

Several years ago I took a part-time job on the side delivering pizzas so I could pay cash for summer vacation, as well as, birthday and Christmas gifts. Many of the lessons I learned while delivering pizzas are applicable to any job in any industry. Some people may consider delivering pizzas as a low skill job, but you will see that if you apply the lessons learned while delivering pizzas you can be highly successful in any job!

1. Make Sure You Are The Driver
Every industry and company has positions that have a higher earning potential than others. In the pizza shop world that position is the delivery driver. Delivery drivers are paid a much lower hourly wage; however, they have a much higher earning potential because of tips. The amount a driver is tipped is completely in her own hands. Qualities like a great attitude, personality, and friendliness largely affect the amount customers will tip. What job in your industry provides opportunities to earn more?

2. Your Appearance Is Very Important
You may think that your personal appearance is not as important as it is in other jobs. However, how you look when delivering someone's food is as important as it is in the corporate boardroom. Whether you like it or not people judge you immediately on several factors, including your appearance, the moment they meet. Additionally, no one wants a dirty looking person holding their dinner at the front door! Your professional appearance will make customers feel comfortable about you; something very important when the time for the tip comes!

3. Prevent Problems
What do most pizza chains advertise? Price and speed. Yes, you will find that those are important. However, once you're in the trenches you find that what is actually most important to a pizza customer is quality and error free transactions. Customers are willing to wait an extra 10 minutes or pay an extra $3 as long as you remember the drinks or the extra toppings or don't deliver a squashed pizza. Nothing makes your tip disappear faster than a problem. Taking a few extra minutes to ensure you have the right directions, food, and requested extras will guarantee a happy customers and a larger tip!

4. Communicate With Customers
If there is one thing that pizza customers hate (actually any customer), it is not knowing what is going on. We just talked about preventing problems. They can happen even when we give our best effort. One thing highly tipped delivery drivers find out though is that customers are very forgiving if you just ask them for help or keep them in the loop. Calling your customers in advance to let them know you were out of a particular product they ordered, you are going to be late, or that you are on the way makes almost always leads to even larger tips. Keep your customers in the loop and you will keep yourself in cash!

5. A Warm Personality Is Just As Important As Warm Pizza
Many pizza customers are repeat customers so develop a good rapport with each customer. In fact you will find that a handful of customers order from the pizza shop almost every day! Make a fuss over all your customers, but particularly your regulars. They will appreciate a gracious, thankful delivery people and reward them with larger cash tips for their warm personalities.
