Your appearance and others' perception.

It may not be fair or a even an accurate way of evaluating someone, but we are judged by our appearance. Study after study demonstrate how our appearance affects our success and interaction with others. By Gladys Edmunds, for USA Today's Gladys Edmunds wrote about her own experience with a personal financial planner that arrived at her home dress in biker clothes. He was a nice enough person and came highly recommended by a friend, but his appearance became a major distraction for Gladys, as it wasn't aligned with the work he was doing.

Gladys' experience is not uncommon. Again, you may believe that you shouldn't have to be concerned about how people will judge your appearance, but there are situations when you must consider that you will be visually sized up when you first encounter someone new. For example, if you are at a job interview, sales call, or giving a presentation of some sort, your appearance could help drive your points or completely distract others from the value your words and expertise bring. You don't have to go overboard, but look at yourself prior to a particular engagement and honestly assess how others may perceive you based on your appearance.
